Denver-based “stoner-rock” (or however you prefer to describe heavy, fuzzed out rock ‘n roll) band Luna Sol recently dropped their debut album Blood Moon via Slush Fund Recordings. Though it’s their first record in this formation, the band members are no strangers to the rock world. Fronted by veteran singer and lead guitarist Dave Angstrom (Hermano, Supafuzz), Luna Sol also features local Denver musicians: drummer Pat Gill (The Feds, ’76 Pinto), guitarist/vocalist Shanda Kolberg (The Swanks) and bassist/vocalist Shannon Fahnestock (The Swindlers).

Keeping everything local, the album was completed at Sierra Estates in Colorado and the artwork was designed by celebrated Denver tattoo artist, Christel Perkins, of Sol Tribe. Adding layers to the band’s already rich history, Luna Sol recruited several star members of the stoner and desert-rock communities: John Garcia (Kyuss, Hermano, Vista Chino) adds vocals on “December;” Dandy Brown (Hermano, Orquestra del Desierto) plays bass on “Death Mountain;” Nick Oliveri (Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age) plays bass on “Pretty Rotten;” Greg Martin (The Kentucky Headhunters) contributes slide guitar on “Death Mountain;” Dean Smith (Supafuzz) plays bass on “Bridges;” Jason Groves (Supafuzz, Asylum on the Hill) plays bass on “In the Shadows;” and Dizzy Reed (Guns N’ Roses) delivers a Hammond B3 performance on “Your War.”

Blood Moon is a pure headbanger’s delight. Growling vocals, driving bass lines, furious drumming and fierce riffs permeate the nine tracks, making the debut a must-have rock record. Highlight tracks include the fiery “December,” sludgy “Operator” and sultry “Your War.”

Enjoy the interview with Angstrom and stream Blood Moon below!

Rocker Stalker: How did Denver become home? How did it influence your writing and overall sound?

Dave Angstrom: My wife, Jen, is from Denver. I fell in love with the mountains when we were dating around 2007. We moved here in 2012, and I really dig it. The vibe of the city tucked under the mountains is amazing—there’s so much to do creatively.  Also, the folklore and the interesting stories of older times in the area really intrigues me. Colorado has definitely affected the stories in Luna Sol, but my Kentucky roots are alive an well in the riffs!

RS: How does Luna Sol differ from your previous projects and collaborations?

DA: When I moved to Colorado, I made a decision to start a project that had no boundaries musically—one that can float and change as time passes and I grow older. Luna Sol is my first evolving band. I’m stoked about that. Playing with Shannon, Pat and Shanda is such an honor. They are amazing people and musicians—and writers, too.  It’s a great vibe and we have all become close friends. We are really starting to become one, which rocks. My other band, Hermano, still exists and has its own thing. We are actually in the process of tracking a new Hermano album for this Summer, but Luna Sol is my main focus now and I dig it.

RSYou have several veteran players on various tracks of your new album, Blood Moon. How did you manage to get them on board? Did you write the songs with the guest appearances in mind?

DA: I wish I was that talented! No, I write what comes naturally. If it feels good, and it sounds great through a vintage plexi Marshall, I’m in. I had a short list of some friends that I really wanted to be a part of this album. I asked Pat, Shanda and Shannon if they were cool with it, and they all agreed it would rock. So I looked at the list and thought of what might work for various badasses and sent emails or made calls begging my friends to be on the album with us. It was very cool of everyone to play on Blood Moon with us. We’re grateful.

RS: What’s the story behind Blood Moon? What can new listeners expect?

DA: I grew up in Kentucky. The Bible belt. There was lots of stuff about sinners and going to hell. It always seemed so intense to me, so when I heard that there were real blood moons happening while we were making the album and that, historically, Christians thought blood moons were a sign of the end times, I thought, “Hey, that rocks—Blood Moon it is!” I love the visual of a real blood moon and the history is fun, too.

RS: Who are some other bands/artists we should be looking out for?

DA: Oh, man, in Denver there are a ton of great bands—Bronze, Throttlebomb, Chingaso, Horse, Black Lamb, Reno Divorce, Abrams, Smolder and Burn, Slim Cessna, also Greg Martin Band who are from Kentucky and amazing. Some others from California—Hookers and Blow, John Garcia, Dandy Brown… man, there are just too many to name or remember.

RS: If you did the scoring for a movie, what would the movie be about?

DA: Guitars. And vintage tube amps. And how they will someday save the world.

RS: In your years in the music arena, what has been the most rewarding?

DA: The most rewarding thing has been playing music with real people who aren’t looking for any rockstar BS. My favorite moments musically are all over the place—from playing Spain in front of 20,000 people all the way to sitting in my backyard learning a Dylan song under my wishing tree. The real moments are what matters. I’m thankful for those.

RS: Any upcoming tour dates? I’m hoping for NYC!
DA: We’ll be staying close to Colorado for now, so unfortunately no New York shows, but we’re working on a Fall European tour that should be badass!

Portland’s been a big focus as of late, mostly because of the (hilarious) show Portlandia, but that is about to be out shined. Enter Foxy Lemon, hard-hitting, 70s-tinged bluesy rock ‘n roll quintet.  Rocker Stalker is thrilled and privileged to host the exclusive premiere of the Portlanders’ new single  “The Factory” from their forthcoming, aptly-titled split release, Joint EP, shared with fellow Portland natives, Cambrian Explosion.

“The Factory,” which you can stream below,  churns out grungy blues rock goodness. Opening with grumbles and howls with sassy riffs and yearning vocals, it soon surges into a adrenaline-infused, slide guitar  explosion that melts you to the core. Foxy Lemon prove rock ‘n roll is alive and well in the Northwest, and I an only hope they make their way east soon.

If you’re like me, you take finding new music really seriously, so seriously that you Shazam your computer, the TV, or even movies at the theater. This is in fact how I came across Nashville-based grungy rock trio The Wans, whose song  “Want You” from their 2012 self-titled EP was featured on USA Network’s Necessary Roughness. I unabashedly reached out last year and managed to keep in touch like any rocker pen pals would.

Over the past year, I’ve seen the band’s notoriety increase exponentially, as they’ve landed spots at Forecastle Festival, Hangout Festival and soon, Austin City Limits.  Additionally, they announced a forthcoming full-length album, He Said She Saidout September 9, produced by Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Rival Sons, Sturgill Simpson), mixed by Vance Powell (Jack White, Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys) and mastered by Richard Dodd (Tom Petty, Traveling Wilburys, Kings of Leon).  Several of the tracks are already out via tastemaker sites like USA Today, Consequence of Sound, Flavorwire, PopMatters, and The AV Club, riling up anticipation of the release.  When the band was planning their “Takeover Tour” a few months back, I did the Rocker Stalker thing to do and booked them a gig at Pianos for August 2.  I had been waiting what seemed like ages to see the band live, so I took full advantage and saw them three more times after Pianos at The Bowery Electric (supporting Jesse Malin), Niagara Bar, and The Legendary Dobb’s in Philadelphia. The gigs were a blast and obviously addictive, as the trio was consistently the stand out band of the night, bringing their high-powered energy and tight musicianship to the stage. Check out the photos from the week on Rocker Stalker’s Facebook page!

But let’s get down to business.  The new album is just plain badass. However good music possesses you, be it headbanging, dancing, flailing, moshing or taking your clothes off, He Said She Said will lead you to do so.  Fraught with bursts of raging rock, sexy grooves, and dejected lyrics, this record blends Simon Kerr’s  smooth and sultry upper register vocals and distorted guitars, Mark Petaccia’s  heavy, pounding drums, and Thomas Bragg’s penetrating bass riffs into a smoothie of rock perfection.  If you’re into “recommended if you like” comparisons, The Wans’ sound  evokes a large dose of Queens of the Stone Age and Nirvana, splashed with Led Zeppelin, Chris Cornell/Soundgarden and tinges of punky brashness, a la JEFF the Brotherhood or Bass Drum of Death.  Opening with the ironically triumphant melodies of  “Never Win,” The Wans show off their knack for ear catching songwriting. I hear there’s going to be a pretty awesome video to accompany it too, so stay on the look out! He Said She Said plummets into the dark depths of the unbridled “You’re Wasting”  and “The Holy One,” which  slinks along with grinding slide guitars and smashing drums.  “What I’m Feeling” builds on grooving bass lines and oozes with seduction and growing tension, which pushes the tortured sentiment to erupt on “So Cruel,” as Kerr laments over and over, ” Why are you so cruel? Try to be a man but you treat me like a fool!”  The Wans take a minor breather with a “balladic” but burdened “Turn Your Back,” and though the slightly subdued mood seeps into the raw opening vocals of “Take Me Home,” it quickly escalates into fits of wailing choruses. “I Can’t Fix You” is probably the most contagious singalong track with “Oh’s” and “Ow’s'” that will be stuck in your head for days, and the discordant chords of  “Tired”  aptly embody the pain of the song’s message. Last but definitely not least, “Black Pony” (featured recently in a BMW commercial), is pure bluesy, grunge greatness, pushing the album to a climactic close with hypnotic beats, crunching guitars, and angst-ridden welps. The point is, this might be my favorite album of 2014 so far, and I’d recommend getting your hands on it. That’s what she said, and that’s final.

Keep your eyes peeled for more from The Wans, but in the meantime pre-order He Said She Said on Bandcamp and find the band on Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram. Happy rocking!

It’s been a while since my last post, but this topic was worthy of getting back into the swing of things. Last week, Saskatoon-turned-Seattle power trio Reignwolf (a favorite of mine if you know me) hit the east coast for a week and a half of insane shows, fresh off a European tour with Black Sabbath.  I made the trek to Washington DC’s the Rock ‘n Roll Hotel on July 26, where I was barred from photography, so you’ll just have to believe me when I say it was an epic show.  A couple days later,  I convinced some Reignwolf newbies to carpool me down to The Wonder Bar in  Asbury Park. The three piece impressed and made instant fans with locals, who weren’t exactly sure what had just shaken their relatively quiet city. Last but not least, Friday, August 1 was the finale at The Bowery Ballroom in NYC.  A sold out evening with Rocker Stalker buddies STRNGRS supporting was an indescribable night. Taking the show down to the floor amongst the crowd, a common Reignwolf show occurrence, was at a whole new level at Bowery, complete with a crowd surfing Jordan Cook (see below), sweat drenched audience, and in a word, mayhem!

All in all, I was rocked like a hurricane and pretty happy about it. Check out all the photos from Bowery Ballroom on Rocker Stalker’s Facebook page!
