Friday night was again spent at a single venue with an extensive line up.  Rocker Stalker buddied up with CitizenMusic and The Waster to showcase a wide range of local talent at Don Pedro’s in Brooklyn.  Hopped up rock n rollers Wyldlife set the night off.  Brash and solid Asbury Park-born duo, Brick +Mortar, kept the evening rolling along with power pop/rock group, Walnuts, and electro-rock en Espanol in the form of Concertina.  The Gypsy West mesmerized with ever-changing tempos and intricate guitar work, and  Vulture Shit, the only band I had not had the privilege to see previously, BLEW MY MIND with their noisy punk craft, speedy abilities on drums and bass, and memorable delivery, including a single light bulb suspended from the ceiling and flung around in the darkness.  Last but not least, Black Wing Halo’s dynamic performance and driving force wrapped the night on a high.

Thursday night, I spent the night floating between venues, sampling the sounds of CMJ. I got to Bowery Electric in time to catch Boston’s  feisty garage rock group Twin Berlin and  Denton, TX’s, soulful and lounge-tinged rock quartet, The Ton Tons.  Rockwood Music Hall, which was consistently, packed all of CMJ, housed back-to-back Brooklyn artists,  cheerful indie pop creations of The Canon Logic and The Stationary Set’s dancy, disco-electronic, falsetto-lead numbers.

The second evening of CMJ was not about  going long distances, but spending the time, taking in an entire line up of the Rocker Stalker/Outlet Collective “Trios Do it Better” showcase at  Bar Matchless in Greenpoint .  Though La Resistance added another band member last minute, the thematic hiccup did not affect the packed house’s reaction.  The following three-pieces, electronic-tinged Black Bird White Sky, bluesy rock Chainwave, and multi-faceted Viva Mayday demonstrated the wide spectrum of sounds in New York.  The Gypsy West’s psychedelic, funky, and progressive sounds, DFW’s The Phuss’s loud and gritty rock, and heavy hitters, Lights Resolve filled the room and kept a wide range of tastes engaged.

CMJ 2012 kicked off on Tuesday October 16. My fifth CMJ, I bounced between Bowery Electric for the 11-hour party hosted by The Outlet Collective and some artists at Rockwood Music Hall.  Folksy, sibling- membered band, Wyatt, began the evening at Bowery Electric. Following the family four-piece, I bounced over to Rockwood Music Hall where pop song veterans, Space Hog entertained in primary colored suits, pumping up the audience for Brooklyn’s Black Taxi, who were welcomed home after some time on the road with a packed venue.  Back at Bowery Electric, indie rockers, The Young Things were prepping the audience for hard-rocking out-of-town guests, The Phuss (Dallas), who captured the attention of the entire room  (video below!).  Next up, The Ugly Club reintroduced the NYC indie sound and folk-punk duo, XNY, closed the show with impassioned vocals and mesmerizing drumming.

Schoolhouse Rock once noted that “three is a magic number.” This Wednesday, October 17 at Bar Matchless in Brooklyn, Rocker Stalker, EiPR, and The Outlet Collective present an official CMJ showcase demonstrating the power of three.  The “Trios Do it Better” showcase will feature   La Resistance (NYC), Black Bird White Sky (NYC),  Chainwave (NYC), Viva Mayday (NYC), The Gypsy West(NYC), The Phuss (DFW), and Lights Resolve (NYC), and you will have a chance to dance, groove, and head bang all in one night.  It’s a not-to-be missed event with 21 of the top music makers.  Doors are at 7:30pm, 21+, FREE entry with CMJ badge, $10 without.

Today starts a big week in NYC, CMJ! Bands will be flooding venues throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan until Saturday. Today, Rocker Stalker is proud to be presenting alongside the Outlet Collective at Bowery Electric from 3pm-2am, tomorrow at Bar Matchless from 7:30-1am, and with CitizenMusic and The Waster Friday at Don Pedro’s from 7pm-2am. Stay updated on all the shows at Cmj.com and Rocker Stalker!

The Rolling Stones don’t NEED me to post about them, but I do.  Anyone who knows me knows these Brits are the source of my love for all things rock, and after 50 years of doing it, they continue to prove why they’ve been able to make music for almost twice my lifetime.  Next month, the band is releasing a set of 50 singles on a compilation entitled Grrr, and today, they’ve debuted a NEW track, “Doom and Gloom,” their first studio recording in 7 years.

This is how you do it:

It’s that time of year again when us music types post frantically about what shows to go to during CMJ week.  This year the festival takes place October 16-20, and I’m thrilled to be presenting three shows, in conjunction with some other great sponsors, The Outlet Collective, EiPR, CitizenMusic, and The Waster.

Additionally, the week will get started a bit early, on October 14 at Trash Bar in Williamsburg with some of my favorite Texans, The Phuss, who  are closing in on New York City, as they continue their midwest/northeast/southern fall tour that started last week.  They’ll be playing two CMJ gigs 10/16 and 10/17 at Bowery Electric and Bar Matchless.

Here’s the week in summary.  Click on each to RSVP on Facebook!
