For the past few weeks, I was out west doing what I’d like to think I do best, tapping into top notch music acts. I haven’t had much time to look closely into the music scene of LA lately, but thanks to some recommendations and good timing, I caught some music I had been missing while not living in the City of Angels. Besides Incubus (twice) and The Hunt Club, who you can read about in previous posts, Australian-turned-Angeleno, singer/songwriter, Scott Mellis recommended friend and musician, Lee Ferris, who played the renovated Malibu Inn in celebration and preparation for the next morning’s surfing contest. Mellis himself had a gig a few days after at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, with fellow coffeehouse-style artists, where he featured acoustic versions of tracks from his EP, Dancing for the Murder of Desire, and charmed the crowd with his mini-festival downtown. Fun shopping and original art by LA locals was accompanied by 90 degree weather and bands, including lady-fronted, LA-based Bullet and Snowfox, and Love Grenades. I closed my trip with a bang, with revolutionary rockers, Outernational, who showcased material from their upcoming album that has been recently completed (keep your eyes and ears peeled for news!), at The Soundstrike Benefit Show for Arizona, along with visual artists and bands, Fitter and Aztlan Underground. And, good news! If you’re in the New York area, Outernational finally have a gig coming up in their home territory on August 15 at Bowery Electric!
I must say, a successful stint in LA!
